How to Determine Antique Furniture Values

But in order to be successful at buying and selling antique furniture you must first be able to know how to determine antique furniture values. Before you start purchasing antique furniture, you must first have knowledge about the different kinds of furniture that are already considered antiques. And you must also know about their values. This includes knowing about brands or the name of the person who crafted great furniture in and about 100 years ago. This can be achieved by researching about particular vintage furniture in books or on the internet.

But there are many factors that are used to determine antique furniture values. A piece of vintage furniture doesn’t have the same value just because it belongs to the same category of furniture. Let’s look at it for a minute.

There are four main categories in antique furniture typically considered: English, European, American, and Far Eastern. Each of these categories is further broken down into sub-categories. For instance American furniture is sub-divided into Shaker, New York or Western sub categories. On the other hand Far Eastern furniture is mostly talked about by the period or date of manufacture.

Other factors that play a role in their value:

  • - The type of wood used to make a piece of furniture is significant in determining its value. Walnut, oak, mahogany, cherry or pine, are really the woods that are sought after.
  • - A piece having all its original hardware will be worth a lot more than a piece that has been restored.
  • - You should also make sure you inspect the entire piece of furniture for matching wood. If the back panel or some other piece has been replaced this will certainly affect its value.

One thing you don’t want to do is take a piece of furniture that has scratches on the finish and try to strip or refinish it. Leave it alone. A piece with a bit of a wobbly leg or scratches is a good indication that it is authentically old.

One of the things to keep in mind is that the person who is selling the antique furniture wants to profit from selling the item. Something almost every seller does is value the piece more that what it really is worth. For instance, the seller might make up a story or infer that the furniture was once used by someone who is well-known or popular.

We already saw that the historical background of an antique plays a huge part in its value. Therefore doing further research about different antiques will help you learn about their historical background as well as the history of the people who used them.

So, if you are looking to purchase an antique furniture piece from a seller, knowing how to determine the value of the piece is essential in order to be able to get a fair trade for what you are purchasing. Having a broad knowledge about the different kinds of antiques not only will help you know genuine antique furniture, but will also help you determine if the furniture is really valuable or not.
