Why did the Roman Empire never industrialise?
We have evidence of widespread mass production in the Roman Empire. Theories that it was largely agricultural have been disproven across the board. Pottery is a fine example of mass production – literally hundreds of millions of pots have been discovered, maybe even billions, which in itself is evidence of mass production. A huge grain factory has been discovered in France (Gaul) nearby to a large Roman city, and this facility supplied the entire city with grain.
Mass production existed. The technology existed. The Romans had sophisticated trading partners in the Parthian empire and the Han dynasty in China.
So why did they never have an industrial revolution? Many things like literacy rates were not as high as they were at the Roman Empire’s height until 19th century Britain.
Consensus seems to be: “we don’t know”. What do you think?
I think that the kind of societal revolution you’re talking about only became possible when technology had matured to the point where it became more natural for people to be able to think beyond the constraints of cottage industry. The major advance of the Industrial Revolution was automation, which only became possible once there was a reliable way of producing power, and the innovation to design machines that could take advantage of that power to perform specific tasks. Although steam power was known during the Roman times, there just wasn’t anyone who could make the connection between motive power and manufacturing. It took longer for that kind of mechanical knowhow to develop.
