What is the importance of lion imagery in near eastern arts from prehistoric times till about ancient egyptian times? Thanks i need it for a class and cant find it anywhere!
In the middle east the lion was perceived as a model for kingship! Fierce and the absolute ruler of the pride with all others in the pride serving his needs-killing rivals- a king anointed by nature if there ever was one. M.E. kings used that association to reinforce their own right to rule – a very early use of iconography as propaganda! The palaces of kings were replete with lion imagery as were town gates etc to assert royal ownership and authority.
