Is L.A. overly “diverse”?

Many people say that L.A. is a model of diversity and diversity is a great thing. But is it really diverse in real terms, and could there be a such thing as being overly diverse? This is how I see it. First, I value learning from all types of people – it definitely makes life interesting. But, at the same time, socially speaking I generally enjoy being around people with whom I can relate. I think that is human nature. It’s hard to find many people to become friends with in L.A. because in some ways the city is overly diverse. Moreover, many ethnic groups tend to socialize with their own people anyhow – so the idea of being a “melting pot” is inaccurate. The Armenians hang with other Armenians, the Mexicans with other Mexicans, the Persians with other Persians, etc. I think the lack of unity in L.A. is a major drawback. L.A. is not diverse in practical terms – this is not a melting pot…it’s just a collection of fragments.

You are right about races mainly sticking to their own, but what is great about LA (born and raised there) is that people learn to live together in harmony, okay overstatetment, learn to live together in peace. For example, my son had Asian, Black, White, Iranian, friends and we moved to Arizona and everyone is mainly Hispanic or White. I really do not like this setting, I want my kids to be in a diverse surrounding so they can function socially in this nation that has changed drastically since I was a little kid. In LA, if you are remotely racist, you will probably be run out of town. While we all have our demons, being a racist is just not acceptable in LA or most of California. That’s why racist groups stay in places like Nebraska, Kentucky, etc. you get the point. All in all, LA is a great city, one of the best in this nation, and one of the wealthiest too.

And to who ever has anything bad to say, it’s only because they are jealous and can’t afford to live there. Hmm… I wonder why most celebrities chose to live there? HATERS!!!! I don’t blame you, while you’re stuck in Hicksville and your only fun is to go cow tipping, instead of having the choice to go the the theatre, beach, concerts, great clubs, amazing restaurants, vineyards, amusement parks, need I go on???

I don’t disagree that there is a gang problem, but every major city has problems, i.e. New York, NY. But the difference is that gangs usually target other gangs, they do not hate people from different races, unlike hate groups. Gangs will steal your car, write on a wall, but will not burn a cross on your lawn because you are different. Nor do they target children and women, in fact, most gang members despise hate groups, child molesters, rapists and serial killers. Not to undermine gangs, like I said it’s a major problem. But overall, most people in the US would like to live in Los Angeles, CA.
